THE TURNER REGISTER (turnerregister.co.uk) is a site dedicated to the location and preservation of the surviving equipment made by the Turner Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
A BREIF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY IS:-
1859. Thomas Turner and Sons formed in Wolverhampton. (managed by J.S. Dumbell
1902. The Dumbell's purchased shares in Thomas Turner in order to make cars
1906. Name changed to Turner Motor Manufacturing Company.
1938. Name changed to Turner Manufacturing Company.
1968. Company floated on stock exchange and became a limited company.
1974. Part ownership taken by Dana Corporation. (Spicer brands introduced).
1978. Dana take 100% control. Generally regarded as the end of Turner's.
1996. Caterpillar acquire transmission division from Dana.
Their product range covered
Motor vehicles. Early steam and petrol cars, 1950's By-van and Tri-van light delivery vehicles.
Tractors. The "Yeoman of England" tractor and associated equipment.
Diesel engines. Four stroke and two stroke units for a variety of applications such as marine propulsion, generator units, pump units, compressor units and other mobile units for general duties.
Gearboxes. For their own engines and a wide variety of 1960 trucks including Bedford TK, Ford D series and the Bathgate produced Leyland Redline range.
Winches. Military recovery winches for various Bedford's, AEC Matador, Scammell Pioneer, Thornycroft Antar Mk3, Leyland Martian, Commer Q4, Land Rover as well as the Austin Gipsy.
Tractor Components. Hydraulic unit and belt drive for the Fordson Major E1A range, Timing gears for the Ford 6X series, Synchromesh units for International Harvester and Leyland.
Hydraulics. From basic systems to complete ship cargo loading control systems for super tankers.
Aircraft parts. Wartime supply of landing legs and struts for various aircraft. Rotor head parts for Westland Helicopters.
Others. Items such as the Turner-Bray boat engine and drive axles for Lansing Bagnal lift trucks.
